For many in the U.S., Memorial Day Weekend marks the start of summer. Three-day weekends with pool parties, BBQ and family gatherings have been a tradition for decades for many American families.
Which makes it all too easy to get real tone deaf online, real fast.
Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the American military. Yet even to this day, many brands and brand managers forget the serious tone of this festivity-filled long weekend.
In order to avoid unintentional faux pas, follow these guidelines to keep your posts on-brand and non-controversial.
1: Don’t say “Happy Memorial Day”
I know you’ve seen brands do it (and hey, maybe you have, too!) but “happy” and “memorial” don’t always go hand in hand. For many Americans, this is a painful day of remembrance. Keep that in mind when you’re crafting your message.
2. Recognize Memorial Day respectfully
It’s great to honor the veterans who lost their lives and put their lives on the line for the nation. But don’t try to insert your brand into this conversation, since it will come off as insensitive (and weird).
3: Focus on the long weekend
Just because it’s Memorial Day, doesn’t mean you have to post about it. You can focus on the long weekend and pool parties– just be sure to post on any day other than Memorial Day itself (Monday), and mention the “long weekend” rather than “Memorial Day Weekend”.
4: Talk about other parts of your business
You can always post about your business (i.e. upcoming events, BTS, inspirational quotes, etc.) without making a nod to the long weekend or MDW. Just steer clear of posting on Monday if you’re taking this route.
5. Don’t say anything
If you don’t have anything to say, bow out of content this weekend. Many people will be away from their devices this weekend, and they’ll be back Tuesday. People don’t remember silence, but they do remember fumbles.
Whether you choose to be a part of the online conversation this weekend is up to you. Just make sure you’re following these guidelines and, at the end of the day, remembering what this day is all about.
Thank your veterans, and remember those who have fallen. We hope you and your family have a safe, long weekend ❤️
